Lot 2039
Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.53 g, 9 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT AVG - III•VIR•R•P•C Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG XVII Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 127. Crawford 544/32. CRI 374. RBW 1846. Sydenham 1237. Slightly rough and with a banker's mark on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Roman Imperatorial coins of Martinus J. L. Janssen, ex Bertolami E-Auction 92, 2 October 2020, 1092.

Antony's Legio XVII did not survive the aftermath of the Battle of Actium. Coins recording its cognomen 'Classica' indicate that it was a unit attached to the fleet, perhaps like present-day 'marines'.
